Why change Jobs in this Market?

 

Unfortunately the worst reason to be looking for a new job today is being fired. Then there comes:

  1. Downsizing

  2. Company closing

  3. Laid off

  4. Personal reasons

The common similarity of each of the above scenarios is that each dilemma requires a frustrating job search.

More additional stress comes from our 9-10% unemployment average across the USA. Certain unfortunate areas and population segments such as young members of the job market ages 18-27 are being at a reported 27% unemployment. Extended and prolonged searches requiring over 10 months become the norm.

Many causes of desiring to leave employment may include:

  1. Postponed raises

  2. Eliminated raises indefinitely

  3. Loss of bonus or reward incentives.

  4. Reduced upward mobility within a company

On a more positive side, once new employment is located, one immediately is available for regular raises again with the new employer. Perhaps the new company is expanding giving employees more opportunities to advance their career internally. Often in growing companies there are still supplying profit sharing, regular above average wage increases, year-end bonuses and other perks.

When changing jobs, the opportunity exists to sell your valued skills and experience at a salary more aligned to the current market value. This higher salary quickly makes up for the lower or non-existent raises at your previous employer. Many times a lucrative bonus-structured pay incentive compensation plan can also be negotiated for the executive candidate. Sometimes the new company also has lower priced health care or more added perks than previously.

Sometimes changing jobs necessarily involves a geographical relocation. Perhaps even to a local with lower cost of living or appealing climate change. Parents or relatives suddenly become debilitated and would benefit by having family nearer for an unknown period of time. Many times this occurs at particularly unfortunate spots in a person’s life.

In summary, people are changing companies as a regular part of the ebb and tide of business occurs. The one caution should be obvious – that no company positions are totally secure for downturns requiring a job change.

Therefore it would be wise to be on top of the local job market for employment opportunities when they do become available; should your company’s success unexpectedly changes for the worse.
